Overview
At Barnes Primary School, transition into Lower Key Stage 2 is seen as an exciting and important step in each child’s journey. During the summer term in Year 2, children take part in a range of well-planned transition events designed to help them feel confident and prepared. These include opportunities to spend time in their new classrooms, meet their teachers and begin to understand new routines and expectations. The school places a strong emphasis on making this process smooth and reassuring, encouraging children to develop greater independence while feeling supported every step of the way.
By fostering a safe, inclusive and ambitious learning environment, children develop confidence, form positive relationships and are well supported to succeed. In LKS2, the curriculum is carefully designed to be broad, coherent and knowledge-rich, building securely on prior learning from Key Stage 1 and ensuring clear progression across all subjects. Teaching is consistently implemented so that learning is well-sequenced, inclusive and adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, with opportunities to practise, apply and deepen understanding over time. As a result, pupils develop strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics alongside the wider curriculum, growing in independence, resilience and confidence, and becoming well prepared for the expectations of Upper Key Stage 2.
