Curriculum physical education (PE) at Barnes
PE and sport: a statement of intent
The underlying principles behind our approach to sport are as follows:
- Taking part in sport, and enjoying doing so, is the birth right of all pupils
- Competitive sport is not antithetical to a school ethos that holds equality of opportunity in the highest regard
- Captivating and sustaining pupils’ interest in sport at an early age will lead to a lifelong interest and involvement in sport and physical activity
- Our ‘head heart and hands’ approach will develop the whole child through ensuring an understanding of:
Rules | Communication | Physical ability |
Knowledge | Effort | Fitness levels |
Understanding | Confidence | Competitive |
Responsibility | Resilience | Technique |
Analysis | Respect | Tactics |
Feedback | Leadership | Problem solving |
Put simply, we want all children to take part in and enjoy sport and physical activity; we also want them to be aware of the importance of physical activity and sport in leading a healthy lifestyle. Staff at school work long and hard to offer as many sporting opportunities to children as possible. This is achieved through our extensive curricular and extracurricular opportunities, open to all. All children participate in a minimum of two hours of physical education (PE) lessons a week: one hour indoor (taught by the class teacher) and one hour outdoor (taught by a PE specialist).
