The safety of all our children is paramount – it is the most important thing to us.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility.  

Our school policies clearly outline how we ensure that all our children are kept safe. Please see the pictures below which introduce the safeguarding team at Barnes:

If you have a safeguarding concern about a child you can contact any member of staff and they will refer on to our Safeguarding Team.  We would always prefer that you let us know if you are worried, even if you think it may be nothing.

Safeguarding is our highest priority.  The safety and well-being of our children are paramount to us as a team and our children are respected and valued.   We hope to teach them effective lifelong skills to keep themselves safe and to understand their rights as children.  Safeguarding children in our current climate encompasses many areas:  child protection, online safety, the security of our school as a site, health and safety, behaviour, our anti-bullying policy, radicalisation, racism and discrimination, peer on peer abuse and contextual safeguarding amongst others.  Please read the Safeguarding policy for a more in-depth understanding of our responsibilities to the children.  We have also, with the Pupil Council, created a Child Friendly version which all children in the school have read and can refer to.  

Concerns about safeguarding come to us from a variety of sources: the public, ou rstaff, parents or other professionals. Children are also encouraged to self-refer through our Worry Box if they have concerns.

In addition we have Our Safeguarding Policy explained for pupils which is a document we have created with pupil council to explain to children what is meant by safeguarding. This document is used at the start of each academic year with our children so that they understand what is meant by safeguarding.

COVID-19 school closure arrangements for Safeguarding and Child Protection at Barnes Primary School

As a school we are signed up to Operation Encompass.  This is a police and education early information safeguarding partnership enabling schools to offer immediate support to children experiencing domestic abuse.  It means that if there is an incident where police are called we will be made aware of it so that we can offer support to children in school the next day.

Private Fostering statement

All of our staff complete safeguarding training at the start of each academic year.  We provide regular updates and reminders to make sure that all of this understanding meets the current guidelines.  We ensure that everyone who works at our school (e.g cleaners, school meal providers, JAG and supply teachers) have undergone DBS and police checks and are legally entitled to work in the UK.  Any adult working directly with children will receive appropriate safeguarding training.

Keeping Children Safe in Education is the key information from the government. All of our staff are required to read part 1 (and 2 where necessary) at the beginning of each school year.

Recent staff training

Our safeguarding team has close links with the other agencies and professionals: these include the Emotional Health Service, Family Support, the School Nursing service, Cruse and CAMHS. We refer any serious concerns to Single Point of Access.  This is the first point of contact for any worry about a child and can be contacted by anyone:  schools, parents, neighbours, relatives.  Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility #KeepOurChildrenSafe.
