We are community primary school with a nursery offering education to children from 3 to 11 years. Our school is an inclusive school and we are firmly committed to serving the needs of all the children in our local community. Our admissions policy is set by Richmond Local Authority.

The school admits 30 children to each of our reception classes (60 in total). Please note that children, including siblings, who are already attending our nursery need to apply for a reception place directly to the Local Authority. There is no automatic right of admission from nursery to the main primary school. Parents of children in the nursery are strongly encouraged to apply for a place in a reception class, but places will be offered according to the strict application of our admissions criteria.

We do not process the administration of  applications to the main school. This is organised by the Local Authority. We are very happy to provide advice and guidance about admissions though. This can be obtained by telephoning the school, or by dropping in. Jo Patience, the school’s Communications Manager, is the person to speak to.

Children are normally admitted to the reception classes at the beginning of the Autumn Term, but it is possible for a child to start in the Spring Term of the term in which their fifth birthday falls. We would prefer all children to join in the Autumn Term, so the final decision about this is at the discretion of the Headteacher.

If we are oversubscribed (our maximum intake is 60 places), the London Borough of Richmond Admissions Section will allocate places using the following criteria. These are listed in priority order:

  • Looked after children who are currently in public care
  • Children who have an exceptional medical, social or educational need that requires their attendance at a particular school
  • Children who have siblings already attending the school
  • Children living closest to Barnes Primary School.

The closing date for applications for 2018 is 15th January 2018 – all applications received after this date are late and, unfortunately, you are unlikely to gain a place in your preferred school.  The online service will close at 11.59pm on Sunday 14th January 2018.

Friday 11th May – Further offers made from this date onwards subject to places becoming available.

Thursday 24th May 2018 – Closing date for receipt of community school appeals.

The Wave

We currently have 39 part-time morning places (9am to 12pm) and 39 part-time afternoon places (12.20pm to 3.20pm) in our nursery. Offers for a place in the nursery are made using the same set of criteria as for the reception classes :

  • Looked after children who are in public care
  • Children who have an exceptional medical, social or educational need that requires their attendance at a particular school
  • Children who have siblings attending the school
  • Children living closest to Barnes Primary School.

We will accept registration forms once a child has turned 2 years old.  Your child needs to be 3 years old by the end of August 2018 to qualify for a September 2018 start. We do not have a January intake so autumn born children are almost 4 years old when they join the nursery.  The deadline for applications is Friday 9th March 2018, for entry in September 2018.  Please either email the application to or post it to Barnes Primary School, Nursery Admissions, Cross Street, London, SW13 0QQ.

Offers are made by telephone after 4th May 2018 for the September 2018 intake.  We will invite all parents who have been offered a nursery place to come into school for a full induction sometime during the Summer Term.

Nursery Open Evening – For parents with children due to start nursery in September 2018 an open evening will be held on Monday 20th November 2017 from 3.40pm to 4.40pm.   No booking is necessary.  We will be holding a second open hour in the Spring term.  Date to be confirmed.
